🎥 VLOG 49. first solo out-of-state vacation! welcome to my hawaii vlog!
ps. tried something new for this vlog! 🌺 tagalog voice over + english cc !!
🌈 back in march, i went on short trip to oahu, hawaii! below are my budget tips + reviews on the 'must-try' foods:
🪙 budget tips
1. book a hostel
i highly recommend the beach waikiki boutique hostel. despite being one of the cheapest options around, this place ranks really well everywhere! it’s the definition of great value. most rooms are shared but they offer private rooms too. when i booked, i literally got the last room for those dates—this place fills up fast! stayed in a shared room and paid $200 for 4D3N. the staff cleans the bathrooms multiple times a day, and i think they provide most things you might need. they also offer affordable tours.
for trips, i usually use airbnb, as i tend to spend 90% of my time out and about, so i don’t see the need for fancy hotels. but since airbnb isn’t available, did some research and found this place, which came highly recommended on reddit. it was my first time staying in a shared place and even i wasn’t sure what to expect, turned out to be a pretty good experience overall!
2. ride the bus
the bus can take you anywhere on the island, and it's $3 per ride, which is a bit more than the la metro, but at least the buses are much cleaner! haha. there's a daily cap of $7.5. google maps works great as a guide.
3. shuttle to and from airport
used the service of roberts hawaii shuttle. price is $27.5 going to your lodging. for comparison, uber costs min. $50 one way. the shuttle offers pickup too for $25.
🍙 *HONEST* food review
_disclaimer: these reviews are based on my personal experiences and opinions so keep in mind we might see things differently. if we do, let’s keep it respectful_ 🫶
1. leonard's bakery (16:21)
tried malasadas in original, cinnamon & custard flavors. tbh, nothing crazy but not bad either. it’s fried bread with sugar – impossible to go wrong. few things i liked though: the store kept its retro vibes, service is fast (so don't mind the line), and the bread is served fresh!
2. elena's filipino resto (17:47)
tried their #1 dish- pork adobo with omelet & halo-halo. gagawin kong tagalog review dito since most likely pinoy pupunta. haha. normal lang yung lasa pero marami serving pang dalawang tao. yung halo-halo, di ko masyado nagustuhan. mas masarap yung halo-halo sa mga sikat na pinoy fast food resto and mas mura don. para sakin seems a bit overhyped.
3. liliha's bakery (18:49)
tried the best-selling coco puff and green matcha croissant. this one was a bit disappointing, didn’t live up to the hype for me.
🛵 recommended things to try
1. moped (09:27)
since it is a tropical region, everything’s so colorful especially after the rain. the weather was perfect for just riding around. reminder as a driver myself, it’s good to be aware of how the moped or scooter works and its speed so we can all share the road safely. also followed redditors' reco and rented from hawaiian style rentals – totally recommend it! as you've seen on the video, i asked for a service and they did not charge me even though they told me they would. (tysm! 🫶) . hey offer free maps on their website to help you familiarize yourself with where not to go. allot at least 15 minutes for picking up your rental since the check-in process can take time. cost
2. parasailing (10:18)
felt like being a kite. i wish it lasted a bit longer. it’s $95 which includes cruising a bit on the boat and the actual parasailing experience that lasted 5 minutes
just wanted to add this since it kinda matters in today’s economy lol. while other airlines offer free 1-hour or paid wifi, hawaiian airlines has free unlimited wifi !! 🫶
