Surfing Honolua Bay, Maui, Hawaii January 23, 2023 - Legends of the Bay Contest HSA (RAW CLIPS) (4K)

Back in January, a huge northwest swell moved through the North Pacific and straight to the Hawaiian islands. Waves the height of five story buildings were breaking along the north facing beaches in O'ahu and Maui. This swell event cause the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational at Waimea Bay to run for the first time since 2016 - as the "Eddie" contest only runs when the waves are large enough.

On the upper west side of Maui, however, the neighboring island of Molokai tapers off some of this enormous swell energy coming from the northwest, and delivers incredible surf to Honolua Bay here in West Maui. Just because the surf is smaller than Waimea Bay and Pe'ahi (Jaws), does not mean that these wave conditions are fun for the average joe. Even if you are an experienced surfer visiting Maui and happen to make it out in the line up on a solid day at the bay, good luck trying to get just one wave out at Honolua Bay. The lineup is usually packed with local residents, as well as professional surfers from Maui and abroad.

The Legends of the Bay contest is run by Hawaii Surfing Association and presented by Honolua Surf Co, with mostly Maui residents and local pros able to enter, with the exception of a few wild card athletes. With fifteen minute heats and six athletes in each one, the top two advance resulting in a very competitive contest with some of the best surfers on the island.
