Panic!! Russia Makes U-Turn, Deploys Warship to Defend Yemen from Illegal Attack
Russia has called an immediate meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the recent strikes carried out by the United States and the United Kingdom in Yemen. The conference, slated for January 12, comes after the US, UK, and other countries started strikes on Houthi rebel targets in Yemen.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak characterised the strikes as necessary and appropriate acts of self-defence.
He highlighted the significance of maintaining open navigation and trade. Sunak expressed alarm about the Houthis' continuous attacks in the Red Sea, especially recent instances involving British and American vessels.
US President Joe Biden applauded the targeted strikes, saying they send a clear message that Houthi rebel attacks on commercial vessels will not be condoned. Biden emphasised the Houthi's deployment of anti-ship ballistic missiles, which endangered the safety of personnel, civilian seafarers, trade, and freedom of passage.
In response to the rising attacks, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution asking for an immediate cessation of ship attacks in the Red Sea. However, Russia, China, Algeria, and Mozambique all refrained from voting.
The Houthi rebels launched these strikes in retaliation for the crisis between Israel and Palestine. They threatened to continue their attacks and impede the passage of Israeli ships until the Palestinian conflict was resolved.
The US government launched Operation Prosperity Guardian in an effort to defend navigation and ship safety in the Red Sea. This operation seeks to confront Houthi aggression, which has attacked more than 20 commercial carriers and ships since mid-November.
