With over 40 years of ocean experience and surfing professionally on the PSAA tour 8 years I am confident this instructional video will help you get started and learn to surf. Building knowledge and techniques I have used for over 25 years and have seen the wonderful results its brought clients and hope it helps many of you.
I have used many different techniques for beginners in the many years I've been teaching and these particular techniques in the video have had the best results for both beginners as well with my intermediate surfing clients who had developed poor techniques threw the years.
The slide up technique along with a few other techniques in the video I have found to really help surfers just learning and for many who still struggle having a technique they are confident with. I have seen the success it has brought many of my students and others who either were taught by other instructors or learned on their own. The slide up technique is designed to evolve into the natural pop-up as you get stronger and more experienced and will help eliminate bad habits that occur while learning without a solid technique. Its now 6 yrs later than I posted this video and am still using this technique as my primary technique as the results have been wonderful for students.

One thing I want to mention for the kids(6-10 yrs old)riding and learning on bigger boards is that to teach them you will have their shoulders closer to center of board as they are lighter and have less control of their legs staying over the tail and need to be further back. I do very well with kids under 10 or smaller kids by having their shoulders even with the center of the board to help keep the nose up. If they are riding and trying to learn on smaller boards like 6'6 or smaller than the sternum even with the center works as long as they can keep their head up higher and legs and feet together while paddling. Parents teaching small children need to pay attention to this technique to help control tail of the board which will keep the nose up and nosediving less.

Watch pro surfers like Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Julian Wilson, Mark Occhilupo(Occy) who are top professionals and are technique specialist from start to finish.
This video is focusing primarily on the beginner or a novice surfer stuck in a rut- watch Tom Curren and Kelly Slater videos where their hands push off the board and where their eyes are looking as they go to their feet. As your upper body gets stronger and with more ocean/wave knowledge, my technique "the slide up technique" will evolve into a perfect pop up and help you get your feet consistently down the middle of the board to the right position. If you start off with great balance and foot position it will be easier to go to the next level!

Best of luck with your surfing and really hope the video helps connect a few of the dots to help you reach the next level faster and safer! #learntosurf #howtosurf #surfcoaching #surftraining
