2023 Hui o He’e Nalu Backdoor Shootout in Memory of the Duke - Day 1

The perennial Hui o He‘e Nalu Backdoor Shootout in Memory of the Duke is an event that is emblematic of a proper North Shore winter. The Shootout’s requisites are predictable, and at the same time, ineffable.

This much we know: The Backdoor Shootout happens when and only when the sand shapes up for one of the best, or the best, Pipe swells of the season. There are several teams competing, but even that is fluid, and you don’t know exactly who’s surfing for which team until they’re on the beach waxing up their boards.
