I had the opportunity to ride the Honolulu Rail (Skyline) and I wanted to share my thoughts on the experience, including some of the things I liked and some of the things I didn't like/areas of concern. This project has been up for much debate, but it's finally here and it will be open to the public at the end of June 2023. I'd highly encourage people to give it a try.
It's hard not to make comparisons to the train system in Japan. However, I think if you look at the Honolulu Rail for what it is now, there is potential. This is just the first phase so while the rail may not be particularly useful for people commuting to work now, it has potential to make long-term impacts in the years to come. And of course, the rail stations could serve as hubs for dense affordable housing developments for local families.
The Honolulu Rail isn't perfect, but I'd encourage people to go and see for themselves. And hey, might as well. We all paid for the thing. :)
