Why is the USS Utah Still at Pearl Harbor
The USS Utah (AG-16) remains at Pearl Harbor as both a war grave and a historical monument. During the December 7, 1941 attack, the former battleship—then serving as a mobile target ship—was hit by two Japanese torpedoes and capsized in minutes, claiming 58 lives.
While the Navy attempted to right the ship in 1944 to clear the channel, the hull shifted and sank deeper into the harbor floor. Salvage was deemed too costly and technically difficult. Today, the rusted remains stay where they fell as a permanent memorial to those still entombed within.
