Many people don't know the US Navy actually fired the first shots of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. But what happened to that gun? Did it survive WW2? Where is it now?
I found this iconic piece of history, the exact gun that fired the very first shots during the Pearl Harbor attack.
Early on the morning of December 7th, 1941, the WWII destroyer USS Ward was dispatched to investigate a periscope sighting outside the entrance of Pearl Harbor. Captain Outerbridge immediately fired upon and sunk a Japanese midget submarine.
Today that gun rests at a World War Two veterans memorial on the Minnesota state capitol mall in St. Paul.
To read a first hand account from the only surviving Japanese midget submarine captain, check-out "I Attacked Pearl Harbor: The True Story of America's POW #1", by Kazuo Sakamaki ....

There's also a crazy story of how the USS Ward was eventually sunk, precisely three years to the day after it fired those first shots at Pearl Harbor!
