During World War II, the United States—while fighting against fascism abroad—enforced one of the most blatant acts of racial discrimination in its own borders. In the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor, 120,000 people of Japanese descent, most of them American citizens, were forcibly removed from their homes and sent to internment camps. Stripped of their rights, many lost everything they had built. But why were they targeted, while German and Italian Americans largely avoided such treatment?
In this video, we uncover the shocking story of Japanese American internment, the racist hysteria that fueled it, and how an entire community was forced to endure years of unjust imprisonment. Despite an eventual apology from the U.S. government, the scars of this injustice remain.
