📍 USS Arizona Memorial, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
⠀
On December 7, 1941, the USS Arizona was sunk in less than 9 minutes during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Most of the 1,177 sailors and Marines who died aboard her are still entombed in the wreckage below, which is why the ship is considered an active grave site to this day.
⠀
Why this place stays with you:
⚓ 1,177 sailors and Marines lost in under 9 minutes, nearly half of all American deaths at Pearl Harbor
🪦 Most of those servicemen are still inside the ship, making this one of the most sacred sites in the country
💧 The Arizona still leaks 2 to 9 quarts of oil into the harbor every single day, known as the “Black Tears of the Arizona”
🇺🇸 Survivors of the Arizona can choose to have their ashes interred with their fellow crew when they pass
🕊 The memorial sits directly above the wreck, never touching it, so the ship stays undisturbed
⠀
✨ Pro Tip: Tickets are free but reserve them in advance through recreation.gov. The first tour of the morning is the quietest and most reverent experience.
⠀
If you ever go, take a moment of silence. What you’re standing above isn’t just history, it’s still a grave.

Have you been to Pearl Harbor, or is it on your list?
